As we first reported here, Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg’s feels go deep about the misappropriation of black culture, and recently she told the fashion industry “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows” – hence, when she called out Kylie Jenner’s braids this week on Instagram, we at SPICE were like;
The is-she-isn’t-she beau of Jadan Smith commented a cutting dig on the youngest of the Kardashian clan’s selife (which Kylie had captioned “I woke up like disss”), saying;
“When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.”
Generating a heap comments from followers, Ms Jenner slighted back;
“Mad if I don’t, Mad if I do…. Go hang w Jaden or something”
– a catty comment which nods to the fact she too was once linked to Mr Smith.
This isn’t the first time that Ms Jenner has been called out by a fellow star for being insensitive about race – earlier this year, Zendaya Coleman weighed in on Kylie’s alleged blackface image, which had also been uploaded to her Instagram (read about it, here).
And, while this recent feud between Amandla and Kylie seems to have come to a standstill, it has ignited backlash and comment from the internet and definitely has us thinking: should celebrities rocking styles derived from black culture be obligated to nod to the fact, or use their popularity to fight for black citizens’ rights?
