Apple Music Launch Fashion Channel & Enlists Alexander Wang as Curator

Former creative director of Balenciaga and head of his own eponymous label, Alexander Wang has been announced as Apple Music’s first ever fashion curator, responsible for play listing soundtracks on its fashion channel.

Merging style and music on their platform, Apple has enlisted Mr Wang to oversee three playlists: “Chill,” “Hype,” and “Vibe,” which include tracks that span ’90s R’n’B to ‘hardcore’ rap; slow jams to dance floor bangers.

The designer told Vogue;

“Chill is my go-to playlist when I get home, when I need to decompress, or when I’m having a night in.

Hype – those songs are mostly derived from playlists that I’ve played in a party bus or en route to a festival or going out. They are songs that kick up the energy.

Vibe is more a playlist that’s in between, with songs that have high energy and also are great classics. It’s good for having people over, drinks; it’s kind of pregame music.”

Asides experience pulling tracks together for his fashion showcases and after parties, the creative has a history in hip hop, having grown up on Q Tip and Trina. He also told Vogue;

“I love musicians because they personify their work. It’s always exciting to see a new, up-and-coming musician evolve and watch how their physical appearance evolves as their music evolves because of who they’re collaborating with or what designers they start working with.

That’s the thing about musicians that I’m attracted to, that their physical appearance and their style play such a big role in how they connect to people. In fashion, the biggest movements that I feel connected to have always been from music, whether it’s grunge, punk, glam rock, hip-hop.

Year-round I’m always trying to find music and define who the character that season is, thinking about the show, the energy, and the venue, so I start collecting a playlist throughout, using it like a memory bank for songs I like.”

Apple writes of Wang’s collection of playlists;

“Kicking off our fashion curator program is the iconic Alexander Wang. Check out his three playlists – CHILL, HYPE and VIBE – on Apple Music Fashion and experience how fashion gets turned up.”

In an ad for the venture, the designer is seen prepping for an epic party but then falling asleep and missing it; no doubt because he’s been listening to the “Chill” playlist.
