Loving the designs at New York Fashion Week so far? Us too, and as it comes an end we pleased to be able to see where the designers drew their inspiration, with top labels like Lacoste, Suno, Brother Vellies and more revealing their mood boards and key ideas.
Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of Suno, who craft their beautiful, printed pieces via Kenya’s (plus India and Peru’s) local artisans, shared their Spring/Summer’16 collection inspiration with Vogue, revealing a sketch of a piece from their range and explaining;
“This season started at the American Folk Art Museum, a tiny little space on the Upper West Side featuring an exhibition titled When the Curtain Never Comes Down: Performance Art and the Alter Ego.
The exhibit focused on a range of artists, generally unknown, who were compelled, most often through trauma and madness to create art. What most fascinated us was the sense of order their art clearly brought to their lives – the organising of random shapes, the collections of objects (like bottles, or sandals, or miniature glass vases), the deeply intricate embroideries.”
For Pyer Moss, who joined 160 designers in telling The Cut about their collection with a single image and phrase, next season is about “Sense of Worth,” with this image used as the inspiration;
Ethical label Brother Vellies, who hand-produce their pieces by artisans in South Africa, Kenya and Morocco, this season was inspired by “Coconuts” and this black and white shot;
For NY-based label Whit, Spring/Summer inspirations came from their “Art Tribe” collage;
At Hood By Air, designer Shayne Oliver shared this shot from tattoo artist Luka Pagan of LVNG Art’s Instagram, revealing it as a source of his new season inspiration, with the key word ” Galvanize;”
Cushnie Et Ochs channelled “‘#UptownGangster” for their collection;
Meanwhile, Spring/Summer’16 for Edun was all about “Performance” and this pic;
