Campaign: Mary J Blige, Taraji P Henson & Kerry Washington for Apple Music

So three of our favourite icons broke the internet on Sunday night: Mary J Blige, Taraji P Henson and Kerry Washington starring in an new 60 second ad for Apple’s new streaming service “Mixtape,” which broke during the 2015 Emmy Awards.

While for many, the ad amazed because of its sheer star power – featuring queen of soul music, Ms Blige, Hollywood actress and star of Scandal, Ms Washington and TV’s newest icon, Empire’s Ms Henson – for Team SPICE, the fun ad gave us life, simply because of its wardrobe.

While we’re thinking all things ‘Fashion’ this month with Fashion Weeks going on worldwide, it was easy to get swept up in the fact that the trio, who are seen arriving at Mary’s house for a mid-day reminisce over classic tunes like Blackstreet’s “No Diggity,” would be clad in the latest trends – Mary throwing shapes in her ’70s-shaped, V-neck catsuit with bell sleeves and a big pair of hoops; Kerry pulling off fashion’s favourite detail: the cold-shoulder top; and Taraji rocking a fabulous, embellished twinset with a cut-out top, doing monochrome with all the cool she could muster.

Something else we loved about the style of the ad was the way in which the ladies moved to the music, bringing a true sense of sisterly fun to the minute long ad, whose most memorable line came from Kerry, who described Apple’s new streaming service as;

“…Like you have a boyfriend who makes you a mix tape, in your laptop.”

Directed by award-winning film-maker and Selma director, Ava DuVernay, the ad is the first of three to be revealed over the coming weeks, which are to be expected during upcoming prime time TV slots, a la this first ad’s big reveal midway through the Emmys.
