Award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has just hinted that Lupita Nyong’o will star in a film adaptation of the novel, Americanah.
The book, written and released by Adiche in 2013, is about a young Nigerian women that travels to the US for university – a story with similarities to that of Lupita’s, with the star having lived in both Mexico and Kenya, and having studied at the prestigious American university of Yale.
Speaking ‘mysteriously’ of Lupita being cast in the role, Adichie told Arise Entertainment 360:
“I’m going to do the mysterious thing and say that Lupita might be making an announcement very soon. I don’t know. That announcement might be about Americanah.”
As well as praising the film 12 Years a Slave, the author also hinted at how Lupita came to mind for the role, saying the actress was:
“An early fan of Americanah… before she was known the way she is now, she wrote me the loveliest email – a very long and passionate email about Americanah.”
If we didn’t already have a reason to anticipate the film adaptation of the book, we definitely do now. In the meantime, you can watch Adiche hint at Lupita’s new role below (around 6 minutes in):
