Fashion and Religion has been announced as the theme for next years Met Gala.
Every first Monday in May since 1971 the met gala, formerly known as the costume institute gala has been the grandest and most fabulous gala or as we like to call it the biggest costume party of the year, Where your favorite celebrities, creative minds and designers dress to suit the annual theme of that years exhibition for the benefit of raising funds for the metropolitan arts museum.
The theme for next year’s event is going to be one of the most controversial themes chosen by the committee, although it won’t be the first time the Gala is subject to controversy because of their choice of theme, the first time being after the 2015 “through the looking glass” which was widely criticized for cultural appropriation and insensitivity. We believe that this will be a lot steamier, and will have some religious clerics talking
However numerous designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Christopher Kane, Jeremy Scott and Jean Paul Gaultier and musicians like Katy Perry, Beyonce, Madonna, and Lady Gaga have referenced religion in their work.
What we believe will be major cause of the uproar is the inevitable religious appropriation claim that will be discussed by various religious people, who will no doubt take offense to certain out fits choices and the message they pass, irrespective of the thought of the designer and his muse.
While we await what next year’s event will be like, and the aftermath of the show, we will keep our fingers crossed and hope that religion is truly “celebrated” alongside fashion.
