Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is one of the most prominent writers to come out of Africa and it is no wonder her books are a huge success both home and away. From master pieces like Half of a yellow sun to Purple Hibiscus and of course one of our all time favourites, Amricanah.
Americanah is one of those books that have you wishing for a movie adaptation but then still leaves you having second thoughts because a shitty movie adaptation will forever ruin the greatness and perfection of what the original story and the characters meant to you.
When news came out 4 years ago that multi-award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o had gotten rights to the book, a lot of us were screaming our lungs off in excitement. It was announced that David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o would star in a film adaptation of the novel, to be produced by Brad Pitt and his production company Plan B. We have waited patiently for further news on the making of the Americanah Movie, and the latest news has surely compensated us for the long years of silence we were all left in.
The Kenyan Born actress has confirmed that production of Americanah as a miniseries has begun and she will staring as the lead actress while her Black Panther Co star Danai Guriria will be writing the miniseries.
Americanah focuses on two young Nigerians who fall in love, and are then separated. While one moves to America to pursue a college degree, the other is unable to obtain a visa, and ends up in London, undocumented. Throughout the novel, they hope to one day be reunited.
Americanah will mark the third time Lupita and Danai will be working together on a project. Danai, who is of Zimbabwean descendant is also a celebrated writer, she wrote the play “Eclipse” in which Lupita stared in.
With the new developments, we can’t tell if David Oyelowo and Brad Pitt are still a part of the project, but we hope for nothing but the best when the show finally hits our screen.
