Oscar-winning style icon, Lupita Nyong’o is seen in an intimate video for Vogue, where she is captured braiding her friends’ hair.
Talking candidly about her love of braiding, which began while she was studying at university in the US, Lupita explains;
“I really wanted to get my hair braided [so] I took this bus to New York to get it braided at the African hair salon and I was so morbidly disappointed.”
Travelling home to Kenya and visiting her aunt’s salon, Lupita learnt a variety of braiding styles, saying;
“I learned how to corn row and box braid, and twist. Now I really enjoy braiding hair for my friends.
For me, braiding hair is an intimate thing, getting up close and personal and I like to do it for people that I know and love and trust.”
The star is seen in the video (directed by Austin Peters) with six of her friends, who patiently sit in salon chairs while Lupita styles their hair.
Proving that braids are definitely back for Spring/Summer’14 (read about the trend, here), Lupita twists perfect ones into a variety of hair types, noting that “your hair is your frame, it’s so important.”
