With Father’s Day on the radar for tomorrow, this new set of images by Kenyan photographer Osborne Macharia brings us especial joy, capturing the underground movement of Kenya’s Hip Hop Grandpas.
…Or so the creative’s images would have you believe, anyway, with the band – named Kabangu – being a work of total fiction.
The images, it’s revealed, were actually created for fun, with the photographer telling CNN,

We just wanted to set a new direction for storytellers and we’ve actually seen it starting to change locally where people are actually producing content that has a story, content that has meaning, content that is futuristic and based on our own ideas.”
The series, which has singer Jamie Foxx and rapper Snoop Dogg as fans, is a follow up to the “League of Extravagant Grannies”project, which captured chic, elderly travellers in an editorial fashion.
This time, Mr Macharia has teamed up with stylist Kevin Abraham, who explained of shooting alternative stories on Kenyan culture;
“I feel this is the time for me as a stylist to tell my own story about my own environment.”
