Fur has gained a lot of attention in recent times,in 2018 alone Versace banned the use of real fur in all its products, Furla also took heed to this trend by also announcing the ban of fur in all its products.
On Tuesday, San Francisco became the largest US city to ban the sales of fur as a measure to protect animals. The use of fur by fashion houses has been an issue with a lot of deliberations from different bodies and organizations.
Fur is not only alluring but it is also against animal conservation as these animals go through a lot of torture just ti end up on a Gucci mule(that was before Gucci banned the use of fur in its products). This decision was made by the Board of Supervisors in the politically liberal California city in a vote that read 10-0.
This is not the first state to ban the use of fur in the United States, West Hollywood and Berkeley have already banned sales of fur but San Francisco is the first largest state and this would definitely come with a lot change
Humane Society International applauded the vote, saying “this is an exciting and historic vote both for animals and compassionate consumerism, and we hope that the world is watching.”
According to Katy Tang, a San Francisco supervisor who sponsored the fur ban bill said that each year, not less than 50 million animals are slaughtered in gruesome ways just so that we can wear their fur and look fashionable. “”My hope is that it will send a strong message to the rest of the world,” she said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.”
This new practice would take effect from January 1 and as much as a lot of persons are excited about this, fashion retailers are worried about the ban.
This news is definitely exciting as it shows that fashion is leaning more into a sustainable path.
