So the big deal in style this week comes from fashion’s favourite icon, Ms Rihanna Fenty, who performed her new single, “B*tch Better Have My Money” onstage at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards, which took place at The Shrine Auditorium this past Sunday in Los Angeles.
While some of the night’s attendees made our best-dressed list (see that here), Rihanna ditched the red carpet and instead chose to land inside the venue by helicopter, with a choreographed performance that we’ve already forgotten about due to her green get up.
Seen stunting in a black Adam Selman minidress, a bright green fur coat, matching thigh-high leather boots, a pair of thick Versace shades and a gold and green choker – all from Versace’s Autumn/Winter’15 collection – as usual, Rih has the whole world talking.
But, while most are busy likening the look to the raunchy, ghetto-fabulous ensembles Lil Kim shelled out way back in the ’90s (when Lil Kim still looked like Lik Kim), we at SPICE have been contemplating the star’s long time love affair with the colour green – hence you’ll find 10 other times Rih looked good in it, below…
1. When Rihanna Got Her Green On at Paris Fashion Week
Spied heading to Stella McCartney’s Paris Fashion Week showcase earlier this month, on Monday 3rd of March, edgy-dresser Rihanna donned a green-themed look that only cheated on the hue with the addition of some massive peach sunglasses and a pop of pink on the lips.
There were prints, there were multiple greens and though we missed it, there were hints of greener, furrier things to come.
2. TBT to Rihanna’s “SOS” Look
Looking back-back though, who could forget the first time we knew Rih was going to linger at the top of our list of Bajan’s to love? A.K.A, the moment the video to “SOS” dropped and had us mimicking the best of its moves infront of our TV screens when we thought no one else was around.
The Barbados-born babe was spotted in a shade of green that totes flattered her skin tone – not that we massively noticed, with that double serving of boob provided by the dress’ low cut.
This look was the first to have us forever more stranded on Rih-Island, and busy looking out for more big flashes of skin (asides from her forehead, though it remains the hottest one on the planet).
3. When Rihanna Went Blonde and Green and Backless
At an earlier Stella McCartney showcase, this time from 2012, the singer stole the internet’s attention when she worked a deeper shade of green, debuted her blonde locks and a simpler look, setting a trend in a chic ’90s-inspired slip dress with thigh slit and choker.
This was a bit of a style breakthrough moment for the star and just as the world’s currently salivating over her iHeartradio Awards performance look, the internet went crazy for her outfit – even though it arrived with her by a much humbler mode of transporation.
4. When Rih was Seen Getting Wiggy with it
Last year, Rih-Rih took our breath away to front the campaign for her collaboration with MAC cosmetics, as she launched a second range of lipsticks titled MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2, following the success of her first a year prior.
Captured Marilyn Monroe-style, the singer wore a bright green wig, which she pulled off like noone else could – and selling out her lipstick in a little more than “Four Five Second” from its launch testified to that fact .
5. That Time Rihanna’s Tongue Turned Green
Going from green hair to green lips, Rihanna was spied at last year’s iHeartradio Awards with showstopping bantu knots and a green-painted pout, setting a trend we are constantly reminding ourselves not to try at home.
While we weren’t necessarily surprised to see Rih without some green to her lips (a quick scroll down the star’s Instagram page will bring you up to speed with her habit), we were surprised to see she has another habit, this time in common with LL Cool J, with the singer having spent the night licking her lips so much she also stained her tongue.
6. When Rih Rocked Green, Sesame Street Style
In 2011, flaunting her thing for textured green way before Sunday’s fur-coated look, the star was pictured at London’s Oxford Street House Of Fraser store, launching her perfume, “Rebl Fleur” in a look akin to Sesame Steet’s main chick, Big Bird.
The pastel blue-green halter top and trouser-combo looked gorgeous on Rihanna, and though the outfit’s way more reserved than her recent iHeartradio ensemble, it was still clear back then that her stylist, like her attitude, was pretty badass.
7. That Time Rihanna Was a Ninja Turtle
Who can forget the time Rihanna dressed up as Raphael (the best Ninja Turtle, FYI) with her boo-thang, Melissa Forde, as they stepped out for a Halloween last year?
The duo and their clique #TurntUp as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, complete with shell (the level of commitment is staggering) eye masks and weapons, and made having green skin a little bit sexy.
8. And then there was the Time Rih Wore Her Favourite Type of Green
Sexier still and less, let’s face it, weird, was Rihanna’s Halloween costume from a couple of years prior to Turtlegate, which had her heading for a night at LA’s Greystone club, dressed like a bride who chose Nickleodeon’s Kid’s Choice Awardsas an alter, with the veil being stained slime green.
In actual fact, the outfit was Rihanna’s attempt to dress as the bride of Marijuanna (one of the star’s most favourite things) but more important than that, was seeing the singer nothing but the veil in bed, the morning after. #ReasonsToBeAddictedToRihannasInstagram.
9. When Rihanna Did Balmain Better Than the Kardashians Ever Could
At yet another top fashion event and rocking yet another trend-setting green ensemble, Rihanna was spotted last season at the Balmain Autumn/Winter’14 showcase, wearing a leather Olivier Rousteing-designed look from right off of the runway.
Sure, it reminds us slightly of the Halloween ensemble detailed above in list (see number 7), but with the help of her bright, contrasting lipstick and strappy, pointed pumps, we think Ms Fenty ran it. And not even the skinniest Kardashian could keep up if she tried.
10. That Time Rih Showed Us Where She Hides Her Money
Lastly, we’re still not over the time Rihanna wore a fistful of green dollar bills inside her panties, for the music video to her track “Pour it Up.”
Seen doing her accounting, we assume, via twerk, Ms Fenty had us feeling all sorts of things throughout all 3 minutes and 17 seconds of the video, wherein she dressed up as a stripper and worked the pole under the ambience of a green light.
And, despite the helicopter and her moves on stage last Sunday at the iHeartradio Awards, we doubt you’ll ever shake the sight of Rih making it clap in a pair of dollar bill-stuffed shorts either – the clear winner of all times Rihanna looked good in green.
