Agbani Darego is one of Nigeria’s most beautiful recognisable faces, with her beauty and achievements being unforgettable. From beauty queen to stylish personality, this red carpet regular is permanently on our most stylish list, and next, we take a look back at her evolution in style – from glimmering pageant crowns to chic, simple dresses…
In the year 1999, a young Agbani Darego auditioned for the Mnet Face of Africa competition, but wasn’t chosen. After completing her secondary school education and while studying at university, Agbani was crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and went on to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant, where she finished seventh, overall.
Following her Miss Universe success, Agbani went for the Miss World competition and clinched the title, being crowned Miss World 2001 – the first black African to win it. And, from that very moment, Agbani’s life changed; she has since represented many global brands and become a business woman – currently standing as the face of Arik Air and Gentle Touch (alongside fellow Nigerian model, Oluchi Onweagba), owning fashion label AD by Agbani Darego, and regularly making stunning appearances at top notch events.
When it comes to her style, the star plays around with bright colours and opts for minimal jewellery, save for a pair of statement earrings on the odd occasion.
The pageant queen turned familiar face in fashion also rocks monochrome like nobody else, making a chic statement whenever and however she steps out.
This year, for the Africa’s Movie Viewer’s Choice Awards 2014, Agbani showed up looking regal, debuting a braided look for the first time ever, with a green one-shoulder and cape creation by Meena – proving that her reign in chic style isn’t yet complete.
Agbani’s evolution is still on-going, unfolding and exciting, and we look forward to what’s next to be revealed from her wardrobe as Nigeria’s first Miss Universe and most consistently best-dressed celebrity ever to hit the red carpet.
