You might not be too familiar with indie rock band, The Noisettes but its lead singer/bassist, Shingai Shoniwa makes an appearance at many a-stylish event, causing a stir on every red carpets she graces. And, with her natural beauty and eclectic style, Shingai is a Team SPICE favourite – what with her interesting and unique hairstyles and ever-surprising wardrobe.
Known for her fierce glamour and flamboyant approach to dressing, the UK-born Zimbabwean has been blazing red carpets in London and beyond with her mind blowing, quirky ensembles, and here we take a look at her evolution in style;
When Shingai Shoniwa first stepped out onto the scene, it’s fair to say we had no clue about what was to follow. Seen here wearing black, ballooning harem pants by Ana Sekularac paired with a feather shrug fort the 2010 Sony Radio Awards, the look may not have been ultra-indicative of the fashion that was to come, but she still looked great, with her signature style subtly showed in the detailing.
Coming out of herself at a Rimmel anniversary event in September 2011, the singer announced she’d arrived and was fully comfortable showing off her flamboyant style, seen wearing bold purple, thigh-high boots and a tribal necklace. A touch of African and her funky natural hair would typically grace her looks.
Wearing all black again, this time Ms Shoniwa threw up vintage vibes, rocking an elegant yet fun look with a faux fur bag and boleroa. Seen here at the Contreau Prive Club launch in 2011, Shingai was already known for her unpredictable way of dressing.
In this memorable look, for which she wears Temperley London for the Warner Music Group Post-Brit Awards party in 2013, Shingai gave her fashion followers a reminder of why they chase her. The mis-match style is just the right amount of cooky to still be cool, and the star continued her trend of looking utterly unique.
The only thing you could ever expect from Shingai, was that when she performed, she’d be bare foot – everything else, as proved by her look here at the Mayfair in 2012, would be a cool coming-together of pieces from all sorts of places.
Going glitzy with her bare feet, the star rocked side-swept curls at the BT London Live Olympic Games celebration in London, 2012, showing that glamourous is also part of her repertoire. But, as beautiful as the gown is, its feathered, ruffled, novelty and asymmetric features kept things very Shingai – and only she could pull off such a look so well.
Performing at her exuberant sale at the Sanderson Hotel in central London – organised to clear her wardrobe before she moved to Los Angeles – Shingai used bold colour to steal the show, with all proceeds raised from the sale of her clothes going to a disaster effort in the Philippines and the Ponayi charity.
But as well as showing of bright colour, prints and a natural approach to her hair, Shingai also has a hot, toned body and has never been afraid to flaunt it;
The star is seen here with a plunging neckline, wearing David Koma…
… and rocks revealing cutouts for the Southbank Awards in 2012….
But, more interesting to us, is her quirkily-coiffed natural hair, which always makes a statement alongside her outfits;
With numerous debates on black women’s hair, it is refreshing to see a star carry her natural “kinky’’ hair with such grace and fabulously. Shingai clearly celebrates her God-given tresses, and we do too.
But it’s not just us who salute her style – the fash pack love Shingai’s look too. Seen at the Helping Hands VIP Fundraising Dinner at the Savoy Hotel in London, The Noisettes songstress was able to wear designer Matthew Williamson’s Spring 2013 dress to make a statement at the event, which was applauded by the press for its water-coloured fabulousness.
And, a regular at fashion events, Shingai was spotted at the ELLE style awards in 2011, sporting a feathered-turban and white sandals, for a show girl-style look – declaring she’s one of the best-dressed in the music business.
