This week, we at SPICE have found curvy fashion that’s fit for Summer, and are looking back at a cool set of covers with one of TV’s most beautiful bodies – Joselyn Dumas’…
Best Big Brand: Nakimuli
As plus size fashion pushes the ideaology of what the curvier woman ‘should’ be wearing, more and more innovative clothing brands are putting their spin on great dressing and coming up with exciting designs – and Nakimuli Inc is on of them.
Launched by Tennille McMillian in 2009, Nakimuli aims to go beyond the traditions of women’s fashion and explore more of the imagination – the what ‘could’ be rather than what ‘should’ be, saying;
“The world we live in often dictates what we should wear and creates millions of it. We at Nakimuli want to create a fashion revolution: replace the cookie cutter model with one that embraces individuality, comfort, and fun.
Become your own trendsetter. Dream. Explore. Dare.”
McMillian graduated with a BA in Dance and her background in the art – from fluidity and vibrancy – can clearly be seen in her label. We love the range of colourful geometric prints, sassy skater dresses and shape-flattering swimwear – so if you are planning a holiday soon, you might want to check out Nakimuli. Take a look, here.
Curvy TBT: Jocelyn Dumas for New African Woman’s June/July’13 Issue
For this week’s #TBT – since we at SPICE are celebrating a month of Summer – we’re taking it back to this time last year, when Ghanaian actress and TV star Joselyn Dumas covered not one, not two, but three covers for the UK, South Africa and International editions of New African Woman magazine.
In the issue, covering June and July’13, Ms Dumas spoke exclusively about her then new TV show At Home With Joselyn Dumas, as well as discussing her bikini body and how she lost almost 200lbs in weight – the healthy way!
An except from the interview, Dumas also talks about being a modern African woman, saying;
“Ideal African beauty is that which comes from within. Beauty inside first, the beauty inside you … We can’t all be the same. Regardless of your colour, your size, your shape, your height, you are an African woman and you know you are beautiful. And if you are confident with that and in yourself, it shows on the outside. You don’t need anyone to define who you are, you need to define yourself first and once you do that, whatever anyone else says, it is just music to your ears.”
Beautiful words from a beautiful lady – we love it! And we also love the covers, below;
Curvy Pick Of The Week: Marks & Spencer’s Summer-Ready Shift Dress
As much as we’d love it to be all play and no work this Summer, we know that officewear plays a big part in our wardrobes’ lives. But, lucky for us, Marks & Spencer are here to help make the commute to work a little easier this season, with their drape back mesh shift dress giving good reason to want to get to the office and show it off to our colleagues.
From the cut to the colour, this dress flatters without needing to hug the curves too much, and its mesh panel sleeves make sitting in stifling heat that little bit easy (and trendier!).
What’s even better is that you can head straight out after work without needing to change; just ditch the blazer or jacket, add a statement necklace, and girls, you’re good to go.
Shop the dress (£89), here.
