As we enter 2015, this week, our delve into the world of curves brings a brilliant lookbook by new brand Rum + Coke, the best pieces to tackle the rainy season weather in, plus our Pick of the Week – something utterly stylish for your first month back at work…
Curves vs… Duster Jackets
It’s the first full week of 2015 and we at SPICE are talking all things fashion ‘newness’… However, whether you’re living in Lagos or London, one element that is synonymous with both cities at this time of year: it is the start of the rainy season.
Well, we like to think of these showers as blessings – especially when it comes to our wardrobes, as it means adding another layer of stylishness to our outfits. Hence, we have found the perfect match to shake you out of any January blues, with the item of fashionable choice being the coveted Duster Jacket.
Traditionally seen as a transitional coat, walking you between Spring and Summer, Summer and Autumn, this is the perfect jacket for layering as it keeps you warm and dry without being too bulky, and can also be worn as an evening cover up. For your curves, with its longline length and sleek silhouette, the Duster Jacket will brush off any bulging hiding underneath and add to a trimmer-looking figure.
So, see below our edit of the best printed versions, which make great alternatives to rain macs and coats. Just pair yours with a palette of black or more prints and you’ll be cooler than any rainy shower this season;
Curvy News: Rum + Coke Exclusively Features Plus-size Women of Colour in New Lookbook
For the first piece of curvy news in 2015, we’ve brought you a double helping of fabulous, with new brand Rum + Coke having launched their “Holiday 2015” collection lookbook, featuring curvaceous women of colour.
Including velvet, floor-length gowns and pop-coloured mini dresses as well as printed two-pieces, it’s fair to say we are excited by the collection itself, but the fact that the designer, Courtney Smith has exclusively used plus-size models for her lookbook – a first for a brand, whose range runs from sizes US 2 to 24 – is pretty special.
When asked about the lookbook’s direction, Smith told Glamour Magazine;
“There’s a lack of positive, empowering images of women of colour and plus-size women, period. The decision to use the models was a natural decision for me to make.
As a plus-size woman of colour, I want to see someone like me wearing amazing clothing. I am designing for a woman who is confident and self-assured. Those qualities have no size tag.”
If there is a manifesto to start your 2015 off with, we think that is it. All that’s left to say is that we had our eye on the velvet, green two-piece first! You can shop Rum + Coke for your favourite piece, here but first, see our top picks, below;
