Outspoken and incredibly wise teen actress, Amandla Stenberg has been spied on one of Dazed & Confused‘s four Autumn’15 issue covers, as well as inside the mag for a reflective editorial and interview, titled “The New Agenda.”
The LA-native, who has been the subject of a few headlines of late, following her informative short film Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows (see it, here) and Instagram feud over Kylie Jenner’s braids (more on that, here), was photographed by Gregory Harris and styled by Robbie Spencer into garments from top labels like Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim, for a youthful take on the Black Panther Party’s style.
Alongside the mostly noir shoot, Ms Stenberg tells Dazed in an accompanying interview about her love of all things online – a place she’s been able to express her thoughts on the misappropriation of black culture – revealing;
“Tumblr has totally informed what I’m interested in and what I care about, especially when it comes to social justice. It’s such a cool platform for learning about black and trans rights.”
The former star in The Hunger Games, who has dreams not only to continue acting but also direct films told the mag;
“I want to make things that have an impact on how we look at the world. I know it’s a tall glass to fill, but it’s a glass that really does need to be filled, as an African American woman.”
And, with her artistic and politically-minded blog on Tumblr, and previous words of wisdom on the black experience within pop culture, we at SPICE are completely down for whatever movement she is yet to make or inspire.
