LFDW13: Mai Atafo

Mia Atafo wowed us last year with his superb collection that was beyond perfection. This year he took us on a roller coaster. He started by confusing us, then clarity came as models continued to walk down the runway.

Designers with huge collection often have the freedom to express themselves and sometimes not in the most eloquent of ways. This collection, especially the womenswear, started a little shaky with white shirts won as outerwear on thicker fabrics in print thereby making a visually disturbing look. However  his intent on androgyny became executed flawlessly when a model walked down in a matching cream waistcoat and city shorts with a white shirt worn under, and a tie. From there on, Mai Atafo took us on a journey of suits and ties…and bow ties. The clothes drew the blurriest line between women and men, pushing the continuous movement of sexual equality, and with a sting of safari.
