A music mix created by Ayomide Kalejaiye which ended with Idioteque by Radiohead set a melancholic mood for the show, but not with the hopelessness usually associated with it. If anything Bayo preached hope with his collection titled “I am a tree”. Hope for the industry that has attained commendable heights but still has a long way to go perhaps.
“I was inspired by the cycle of a tree and how relatable it is to human life and human choices”, those were the words of the designer. What is admirable about Bayo’s collection is that he chose to express his inspiration in a subtle but still-drives-the-message-home way. The uneven hems, the layering, the sheer and the opaque…all these show how all the imperfect parts of a tree form a perfect whole. This is the same with the right and wrong choices we make leading to a perfect life. And while at a glance one might question the wearability of the clothes, a closer look shows almost all can be infused in our daily lives; like a number of trousers he sent down the runway, the tunic tops, the jackets and the two toned print and white t-shirt promises to be a sell out.
