Nigerian designer, Mai Atafo, has been tapped to create the official trophy jacket for the inaugural Johnnie Walker Blue Label Golf Challenge winner, who will be named at this weekend’s event in Lagos.
The prestigious competition will hold at the Lakowe Golf Estate on Saturday, 6th September, where Mr Atafo’s bespoke blue blazer will be awarded to the winner, who will also wear the coveted piece at Perthshire’s esteemed Gleneagles Golf Course as a personal guest of Johnnie Walker during Scotland’s historic biannual Ryder Cup – a world revered European and PGA tour competition between America’s and Europe’s golfing elite.
Mai said of his involvement;
“It is an honour for me, both as a designer and as a Nigerian, to have been commissioned to design the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Challenge winner’s blazer and I look forward to seeing it worn on the world’s greatest golfing stage.”
But it’s no wonder Mai was asked to create this important piece for the high profile event, having shown in numerous international fashion shows including the Lagos Fashion & Design Week in Lagos, Glitz African Fashion Week in Ghana, and J Spring Fashion Show in Paris, and the designer’s Mai Atafo Inspired (MAI) lifestyle label being so well known for its beautifully-crafted, Savile Row-inspired, bespoke tailored suits.
Joe Nazzal, head of Reserve Nigeria, said of the anticipated trophy jacket;
“The blue blazer designed by Mai Atafo is the perfect fit for a competition of this calibre. An inspired, bespoke sports jacket, it reflects the accomplishment of the winner and the prestige of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Challenge as well as the excellence in sartorial craftsmanship associated with the MAI brand.”
We at SPICE look forward to seeing the surely brilliant blazer this weekend.
