In a poignant project addressing issues surrounding race and diversity, students studying at the renowned Oxford University are sharing their experiences as students of colour, with a series of photographs titled “I, too, am Oxford.”
The project sees 65 individuals candidly penning down and posing with their thoughts and feelings, or the ignorant comments they’ve received from other students, in a bid to raise awareness to the fact that:
“…Students in their daily encounters at Oxford are made to feel different and Othered from the Oxford community… Students of colour are demanding that a discussion on race be taken seriously and that real institutional change occur.”
The project comes following a similar initiative launched in the same week by Harvard University, titled “I, too, am Harvard,” and provides powerful insight into the experiences that people from varied nations are having while studying in Western institutions.
We at SPICE are pleased to have learned of the initiative and join the rest of the online community in applauding the bold efforts of the students involved.
