As Summer draws to a close, the MTV Video Music Awards proves once again that its red carpet cannot be rivalled, with everyone who is anyone in the music industry attending the event in their stylist’s best.
With the night overall bringing the good, bad and dare we say ugly looks to the world’s attention, we at SPICE have listed our favourite and most memorable looks, below. Take a look;
First up is Orange is the New Black actress, Uzo Aduba who turned up in an embroidered-waist little black dress with on-trend bold shoulders. Pairing her look with ornate silver sandals we were reminded just why we love this stylish newcomer. #Chic!
Next, country singer, Taylor swift went daring with her ensemble, shaking things up in a long-sleeved bodysuit from Mary Katrantzou’s Resort’15 collection, which she wore with Elie Saab booties and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. We definitely applaud the departure from her usually ‘safe’ wardrobe, so more of this please, Taylor.
And speaking of safe, Beyonce – who had the most anticipated performance of the night – was seen wearing a black lace and beaded Nicolas Jebran gown, which was pretty but didn’t exactly scream “Queen Bey.” That said, her Dynasty-era earrings from Lorraine Schwartz were a bit of a talking point and we definitely won’t forget the size of them in a hurry.
And didn’t rapper Iggy Azelea look ‘fancy’ in her icy-hued Versace gown? The star gushed on the red carpet that the fashion house had flown the dress in from Milan especially, with its own body guard, no less – and, with her hair slipped backwards and the the dress giving pure mermaid vibes via its fishtail silhouette and cup enhancing cutouts, we think Ms Azelea looked just flawless!
Ex-Destiny’s child singer and soon-to-be mother Kelly Rowland radiated on the carpet too, showing off her growing baby bump in a shimmering, light blush dress that met the floor. Although the star rocked plant of gores jewels, courtesy Lorraine Schwartz, we think that she’d have looked just as good without them, considering she was already ‘carrying’ the best ‘accessory’ of the night – her bubba.
AndKelly’s Destiny’s Child co-star, Michelle Williams looked beautiful on the night too, stepping out in a black and white printed gown and gold, embellished sandals. For someone who’s been away from the red carpet for a little while, the star proved this is the way to make a comeback: looking like you never left it.
Stealing the show though and arriving in a Donna Karen (of course) Atelier crimson, silk gown, British songstress Rita Ora dazzled in all red, matching her dress to her bold pout. The star also rocked trendy, slicked-back hair – not that anyone noticed with the dress’ plunging neckline and thigh-high slit…
Hot in red also, singer Demi Lovato also turned up stunning, following the night’s love for deep V cuts and high leg splits. Wearing a simple Lanvin dress that was clearly designed for this very moment, Ms Lavato looked the best we’ve ever seen her.
But, leaving us breathless in all black was our favourite, Solange Knowles who was sparkling in a tuxedo-inspired suit from H&M’s Studio Collection, which she paired with Stuart Weitzman sandals. Rocking Stephen Webster and XIV Karat jewels, the star continued her reign as the carpet’s most stylish – not that we’d dare tell hr in a crowded elevator though.
$0-year-old Jennifer Lopez stepped out in full diva mode, wearing a shimmering silver Charbel Zoe gown with multiple cut-outs and a slit up to the hip. One look at the singer and we were reminded just how hot this star can be when she adopts the ‘more is more’ mantra.
And supermodel Jourdan Dunn struck a statuesque pose in her Balmain Resort’15 ensemble, made of a black bandeau top and long flared skirt. Looking like she’d just stepped off a runway somewhere, the gorgeous model completed her look with Stephen Webster jewels and a cropped bob hair ‘do that we have to say we are digging. #Gorgeous!
Like Jourdan, model Chanel Iman also wore Balmain, selecting a heavy leather woven dress from the brand’s Autumn/Winter’14 collection. If anyone has the body for this dress, it’s Ms Iman…
Singer/designer, Gwen Stefani attended the event in a self-designed L.A.M.B. ensemble that featured a structured bustier-inspired top and skinny pants in a high-octane shade of pink, with contrasting black accents. We love how the usually quirky, playful dresser completed her look with a side twist to the hair – a cool detail from this out of the box It Girl.
And cool couple Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo were one of our favourite couples of the night, as they sparkled together in head-to-toe white. Both singers were out to prove that Summer’s trend for bright white is still going strong, and it’s nice to see how strong these two’s wardrobes are as well.
And lastly, we have to make room on our list for another couple we loved on the red carpet – Katy Perry and rapper, Riff Raff who were caught in a throwback look made of custom Versace denim. While this isn’t necessarily the most suitable (or stylish) look for the red carpet, we have to applaud the commitment to a theme: designer denim on designer denim, to the max. #Amazing.
And that’s it guys – our top looks from the 2014 MTV VMAs. But who rocked your favourite look? Share it with us below or on Twitter via @SPICETVFRICA.
