SAFW Opens 2016 ‘New Talent Search’ Competition

South Africa Fashion Week is set to hold this September (20th till 24th), and upcoming designers are being called to apply for its New Talent Search competition, for a chance to win a trip to London Fashion Week and a year’s representation by an agent.

The 2016 edition of the initiative is held in collaboration with SunglassHut, with the total prize valued at R85,000. It’s open to womenswear designers with existing labels, who have been in the business for less than 7 years and who are “working towards establishing themselves/their brands in the South African Fashion Industry.”

Last year’s winner was Joberg-born Dean Charles Hauptfleisch of With, who beat Greekyle, Iamione, Mod-ish and Somerset Jane to the title, with judges including Marie Claire’s fashion director, Sharon Becker and Sunday Times’ Fashion Weekly editor, Tiaan Nagel.

To enter the competition, applicants need to register first before 24th of June, and have their portfolio submitted by June 30th 2016. Successful applicants will be called to present their portfolio plus sketches and fabric swatches for 8 looks from their Autumn/Winter’17 collections, and if successful there, will go on to present the 8 looks to judges during fittings.

The SAFW New Talent Search was created to aid;

“Young designers that want to become leaders [and] be catapulted into the creative Fashion Design Industry. This will help them to move forward, with long-term marketing opportunities, guidance and support.”
