The stars were out to shine on Sunday for the 2014 American Music Awards, which went down at the Nokia Theatre in L.A. And, from all black ensembles and thigh-high slits to suits and boldly-hued ensembles, celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Jhene Aiko, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya Coleman and Jordin Sparks brought their A-game, while others have left us gobsmacked as we struggle to understand what they were wearing…
Here’s the most memorable looks from the AMAs night – see if your favourite was on our style radar;
First up and leading a pack of all-black everything-wearer, raptress, Nicki Minaj kept her look simple, girly yet rather sexy in a black sheer and cut-out number by Alexander Wang, which was pleated at the skirt and paired with black Manolo Blahnik pointed pumps. We at SPICE love the high neck and those printed patches on the dress, with the overall look complimented by Nicki’s new, nearly ‘nude’ makeup, save for a pretty pink pout.
Also donning the high neck look, Tracee Ellis Rose covered up in a sleek, black turtleneck dress, paired with sheer Christian Louboutins pumps. How elegant does the star look?! We just love this ensemble…
…Especially its peek-a-boo back feature, leaving Tracee looking (as usual) super flawless!
Continuing the night’s trend of head-to-toe black, Selena Gomez looked stunning in a Giorgio Armani Prive silk jersey, long-sleeved gown with a plunging back and dramatic front slit. Complimented by Neil Lane jewellery, the singer looked perfect and very demure for her young age. Go Selena!
Orange is the New Black star, Uzo Azuba kept her look simple and chic as always, rocking a black Vivenne Westwood dress, black Giuseppe Zanotti sandals, accessorised with a Lee Savage clutch. We love the double strap on her heels, we love the swept back hair and we especially loved Uzo’s finishing touch – her smile. #Hot!
And Mary J. Blige didn’t disappoint either, showing off her toned arms and figure, and sparkling in an embellished black Mark Zunino Haute Couture gown. Black was a popular colour for the night, but Mary just went and owned it!
Star Jones was also spied in the minimal palette, but her all black look was pretty unexplainable style-wise and not all that age appropriate, either. Sorry Ms Jones!
Bleona Qereti decided to step out in just panties, some pasties and fishnet dress, which looked like a gothic nod to Rihanna’s infamous CFDA ensemble of this year, but we don’t expect to have top designers penning an open letter of praise for this look, like Tom Ford did recently for Rih’s.
Bringing it back to beautiful outfits thought, Khloe Kardashian stunned in a Versus Versace side cut-out dress, looking gorgeous as ever with her dip dyed hair.
And Charlie XCX wowed on the red carpet in old-school glamour take on all black wearing, with her Vivienne Westwood off-the-shoulder, cleavage-baring black gown, Dionia Orcini rings, dramatic kohl-rimmed eyes and red pout. The final effect was a sumptuous, sultry look.
Still on all black everything but moving onto the other popular feature of the night, the thigh high split, singer Fergie brought life to the red carpe as she showed a lot of leg in her chic Halston gown and Versus Versace triple clasp sandals. Yummy mummy or what!
Following suit but adding pretty pastel touches, model Heidi Klum shimmered in a black and pink beaded Versace Spring’15 dress and matching, skyscraper heels to look the picture of perfection.
Kendall Jenner was simply sexy on the carpet, looking every bit the model in her Yigal Azrouël Spring’14 silk organza, eyelet gown. If it seems like we’ve been seeing a lot of Ms Jenner this year, this dress showed us the rest of her.
Kendall’s sister, Kylie Jenner also flashed some skin in an Alexandre Vauthier Spring’14 dress, scoring major fashion points for her unique, oxblood-hued satin gown, which featured both a plunging neckline and hip-high slit. Paired with Tamara Mellon pumps and a fringed Alexander McQueen shoulder bag, this look screamed the star’s style – edgy, young and fun with a side of expensive taste.
Slits still trending, Giuliana Rancic rocked a navy blue, white and black Alex Perry dress with Christian Louboutin “Impera” pumps. We love the patch of sequins and we love the criss-cross heels – it’s the details of the look that really caught our attention.
Jordin Sparks sparkled in her halter neck Halston Fall’14 dress, which also featured the thigh high slit. The cut, the gold foil, the thinly-strapped shoes… We really don’t know what we like the most but we can tell you we like this ensemble on the singer – a lot!
Nigerian songtress, Dencia was a Nicki Minaj look alike once more as she stepped out for the AMAs. She has a body to die for but that ensemble? We’d not be caught dead in it… Sorry Dencia!
Kate Beckinsale slinked along the red carpet in a Kaufman Franco gown with a sexy plunging neck, which was also backless and baring side cutouts. Alongside a smoky eye and a simple ponytail, this look really caught the our attention. Or maybe it was the well-placed, glittering necklace hanging above the dress’ deep V?
Gigi Handid worked a cool Prabal Gurung suit she paired with a lacey bra top, bringing tomboy-sexy vibes to the night…
… And following the trend, singer Jessie J stepped out with her boyfriend in their first official public appearance as a couple, wearing an all white, floor-sweeping suit.
Onto more suits, rapper Wyclef Jean turned up a bit of a rocker in his Diesel Black Gold Fall’14 embellished moto jacket, black leather pants and a white cotton t-shirt. Hardly a suit, but for the AMAs this two-piece was pretty palatable.
Neyo on the other hand looked dapper as always, turning up in a navy suit with matching hat and a pair of classic-rimmed glasses. #SoSuave.
The real stars of the night though were those who chose colour. Garcelle Beauvais was a breath of fresh air in a bold coral Michael Costello gown, topped off with her sexy curly locks and metallic heels. Stunning, no?
And Rosci Diaz looked great in her printed look, with the blue pattern of her dress being the highlight. Only criticism is that this did look a little relaxed for the AMAs, with the ensemble passable as something to wear to dinner with friends… Even with the cutouts and colour, something was missing…
But Jennifer Lopez made sure we knew this was a major red carpet, leaving us jealous of her figure yet again to wear a sexy, soft pink bandage Reem Acra Spring/Summer’15 dress, completed with Christian Louboutin heels. #Wowzers or what!?
Rita Ora pulled out one of the best looks of the night, arriving as a vision in bright lemon with her Zac Posen strapless dress, which featured a sweeping train. The colour was completely unexpected but the drama brought by the train was typical of the star who’s known for her edgier, out-there style.
Zendaya Coleman rocked the red carpet in a whole new way, wearing a bold ‘fro of curls with a Georgine gold ensemble, and what looks to be a bikini top. We’re not sure if we love the look upon close inspection, but in terms of head-turners? Yes, Zendaya nailed it.
And lastly, on our style radar stepped The Walking Dead star, Zimbabwean actress Danai Gurira, who was vibrant and vivid in her Naeem Khan Resort’15 gown. The print, the shade and the sheen of the fabric looked just amazing on her skin and those gold strappy heels? Just beautiful.
