The 2014 CFDAs Style Special: Rihanna, Lupita Nyong’o, Iman & More!

The Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (also known as the Vogue Fund or CFDAs) took place at the Lincoln Center in New York on Monday 2nd of June, with a bevy of brilliantly dressed stars in attendance.

The organisation, which is aimed to improve the strength and success of the fashion industry, as well as raise funds for charity and industry events, awarded professionals and icons alike for their contribution to style – including Rihanna (who turned up half naked and half in protest to her nipple ban on Instagram) and designers Joseph Altuzarra and Raf Simons.

With so many hot looks to choose between, you can see our painfully picked list of the night’s best looks, below – and don’t forget to tell us if we missed any via the comments box or @SPICETVAFRICA;

First up, it’s Fashion Icon of the Year award-winner and all ’round rebel, Rihanna, who turned up in an uber sheer, nipple and g-string-revealing number custom made by Adam Selman and comprised of 216,000 Swarovski crystals. While we do think there’s a lot of body on display here, we also happen to love that body and think the styling helps us distract from the nudity a little, leaving us able to say we like the shimmering flapper girl theme (from the head tie, long gloves and fur bolero) even if there is a lot of body flapping about.

 Mad props for the bravery and for sticking two up (or out) at Instagram for banning her nipple shots, too...

Stunner and upcoming star of Chimamanda Ngozie Adiche's next film, Americanah, Lupita Nyong’o stepped out in an outfit by African fabric champions, Suno, paired with Sophia Webster heels and Jennifer Fisher jewellery. While some critiques were disappointed with the look, we at SPICE happened to love it; the smart ensemble proving that prints can work for classy night looks with Lupita looking absolutely radiant in hers.

Solange Knowles made a stylish resurfacing (since her elevator controversy) in a shimmering custom-made Calvin Klein Collection dress, accessorised by Jennifer Fisher jewels. We love this Diana Ross-esque look, worked well with big, bouncy hair, and almost forgot for a moment how gangster the star looked in that infamous CCTV footage...

Model Joan Smalls wore a gown by her bestir, Prabal Gurung, showing off her toned body beautifully via a midriff cutout and thigh-high split. The severity of the dark, skin-baring dress is softened by her fringed 'do and we just love this fierce look on Joan.#Gorgeous.

Supermodel veteran, Iman took to the carpet too, sporting a silk, draped look in multiple blues. We at SPICE think the colour is amazing on Iman's complexion and can't believe how timeless her beauty really is.

Model and actress Anne V took sports-chic to the event, wearing boy-shorts and tee look by Jonathan Simkhai. We love the print, we love the minimal shoes and think sporty, tomboy styling needs to make more of an appearance on the red carpet. Well done Anne!

Chanel's model colleague, Coco Rocha stepped out in a Christian Siriano dress, paired with a daring Heather Huey hat that stole everyone's attention. The grown-up monochrome look was a hit with the press, and we can't help but agree that the contrasting appliqué design of the dress compliments her porcelain skin perfectly.

Jennifer Hudson wore a Kaufmanfranco Autumn/Winter'14 dress which bore cutouts and asymmetrical sleeve, topped with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. We love how this look emphasises her curves, and how the thigh-high split gave a glamourous 'oomph.' We remain fans of J Hud for this look.

The Olsen Twins are no stranger to strangely beautiful looks that seem inspired by something way past their years, and for the 2014 CFDAs, they didn't disappoint. Wearing all black ensembles from their label, The Row we were impressed as ever by their way with a kitten heel, and their bohemian-meets-Old-Hollywood vibe...

Model Chrissy Teigen and her gal pal Rachael Roy turned up together in bold, bright hues - Teigen wearing a laser cut lace mini dress and matching blazer, while Ms Roy wore a floral print number. We can't say whose look we prefer but we do think they looked great as a pair.

Another pair in our sights were supermodels Tyson Beckford and Naomie Campbell, who looked the epitome of gorgeous and glamour. Ms Campbell, who recently turned 44 (if you can believe it) was seen smiling in strappy dress full of sequins, while her handsome counterpart came dapper in a tux and bow tie. Just #wow to this picture and the style it showcases.
